Fostering Healing, A Program of Kids Matter Inc

Children who have experienced trauma often spend time being cared for by relatives or foster parents. Fostering Healing is a program dedicated to children who are under child protection order or who live with relatives. We provide assistance to grandparents, relative kinship families, and foster parents.

Why "Fostering Healing"?

Children who have been abused, neglected, lost a loved one to homicide, witnessed domestic violence or experienced other trauma often show the impact of this trauma in their behavior or attitude. Caregivers often have questions, need information, or want help raising these children. Caregivers who are not legal guardians often face challenges in getting help for the children they love.

What We Do

The Fostering Healing Program seeks to strengthen the lives of children living with relatives or in foster care and whose young lives have been touched by severe neglect, abuse, violence, or crime. We strengthen lives by educating the community and caregivers about the impact of such circumstances on children and by assisting these children and their caregivers in accessing all the services the children need in order to heal.

Caregivers frequently ask for assistance with medical insurance matters, legal and court proceedings, and victim compensation eligibility. They may also seek assistance in obtaining critical support services regarding medical, mental health, and school issues.

These services are free, voluntary, and confidential. Services are offered through a grant from the State of Wisconsin Department of Justice to assist child victims and their caregivers.

Note for foster parents: Our program does not replace formal child welfare services for the children in your care. Rather, we support and supplement those services by working in collaboration with the child welfare agencies.

The Fostering Healing Program is supported in part by Victims of Crime Act Subgrant No. 2006 -081-08 awarded by the Wisconsin Department of Justice Office of Crime Victim Services under a grant from the U.S. Department of Justice Office for Victims of Crime. The opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed do not necessarily reflect the views of the grantor agencies.
