Changing a child’s story can begin with just a simple act. Paula Wheeler is one of our incredible volunteers whose act of compassion led her to CASA and a chance to become a strong advocate for foster youth in Milwaukee.

Helping Young People

Paula works as a college counselor with Galin Education, which is based in Madison. Her role involves guiding high school students through their college search and application journey. “It’s super fun!” she says with enthusiasm. Her career reflects the same goals she brings to her volunteer work—empowering young people to embrace possibilities and hope for the future.

Discovering Kids Matter

Paula first heard about the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program when she was looking for free legal aid for a kinship youth. She shares, “I was helping my daughter’s friend, who was in kinship care, with a challenging situation.” Paula discovered our organization in her search for legal support, and when she learned more about Kids Matter CASA, she knew she had to join.

Overcoming Difficult Times

The timing of her decision to become a volunteer wasn’t ideal. When Paula began her CASA training, it was May 2020, and Covid-related restrictions were in full effect. “My cohort of CASA trainees was 100% online,” she recalls, “but despite that, I learned so much and made some connections!”

Since joining Kids Matter CASA, Paula has supported two teen girls. Her years of dedicated service as a volunteer showcase her resilience and willingness to do whatever it takes to help children. She is passionate about the importance of CASA for kids in care, and she explains, “Kids need to know that someone is on their side when they are in challenging family situations. I want kids to be able to feel like they aren’t powerless and know that someone is in their corner.” This unwavering belief is what drives her advocacy and makes her such an asset to not only the children she serves, but the whole Kids Matter CASA program.

“Paula made such a huge difference for Sheila*, who was struggling and running away. She helped Sheila find a therapist who really connected with her. Ultimately, Paula helped Sheila get reunited with her mother in Kentucky. Without Paula’s involvement, I think Sheila would have continued running away out of frustration instead of finally getting a new start with her mom.”

Outside of her professional and volunteer commitments, Paula is a fan of musical theater. “Sometimes to an obsessive degree!” she admits with a laugh.

At Kids Matter CASA, we are endlessly inspired by volunteers like Paula—people who step up, even during uncertain times, to stand beside children who need a voice. If you’re interested in becoming one of them, learn more about how you can get involved. Want to talk with Paula in particular about her experiences as a volunteer? She’ll be speaking at our Coffee with a CASA event on Monday, August 18, so be sure to stop by!
